The Department of Commerce recently announced two significant awards under the CHIPS and Science Act, highlighting new developments in the U.S. semiconductor ecosystem. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Akash Systems have received support to advance critical semiconductor technologies and bolster domestic manufacturing capabilities. These awards demonstrate continued momentum in the effort to strengthen the U.S. semiconductor supply chain and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers.

TSMC and Akash Systems Driving Innovation

TSMC, a global leader in chip manufacturing, is set to expand its footprint in the United States with support from the CHIPS program. The company plans to enhance its advanced semiconductor fabrication facility in Phoenix, Arizona. This facility will focus on producing cutting-edge chips that are crucial for a wide range of industries, including defense, automotive, and consumer electronics. TSMC’s expansion represents a significant step forward in bringing high-volume, advanced chip production to U.S. soil, fostering domestic innovation and job creation while ensuring greater supply chain resilience.

Meanwhile, Akash Systems, a pioneering small business, is receiving support to advance its work in gallium nitride (GaN)-on-diamond technology for satellite communications and other critical applications. This innovative material improves power efficiency and performance in high-frequency devices, reducing energy use while enabling next-generation communication systems. Akash Systems’ project highlights the CHIPS Act’s commitment to fostering small business innovation, emphasizing breakthroughs that have both commercial and national security implications.

Building a Sustainable Semiconductor Industry

These awards underscore the Department of Commerce’s broader efforts to invest in the future of semiconductor technology and production. By supporting major players like TSMC alongside innovative startups like Akash Systems, the CHIPS and Science Act continues to build a more robust, sustainable semiconductor industry in the United States. Together, these investments are driving innovation, creating jobs, and positioning the U.S. as a leader in critical technologies.
